Dana Murphy, Republican candidate for Oklahoma Corporation Commission, returned to  Sapulpa on Thursday.

She believes it is most important for Oklahoma’s future to elect the most qualified people in the energy sector.

“And it is also about wanting to give something back,” she said. “I have the most incredible oil and gas law practice –– things are going well for me –– I feel terrific, and I feel like we need a different kind of leadership.”

This is Murphy’s second attempt at seeking a seat on the commission.

The Alva Review-Courier: Corporation Commission candidate visits Alva E-mail
Wednesday, 16 April 2008

Dana L. Murphy made a sweeping tour of Woods County Friday as she began her campaign for Oklahoma Corporation Commission.

Murphy visited Waynoka and Freedom before coming to Alva to tour the NWOSU campus, the city of Alva and greet citizens at a special reception in her honor held at McDermott Real Estate Agency Friday afternoon.

In her honor, DeVine Water lined the entry wall with personalized bottles of water bearing Murphy’s name and photograph.

This is Murphy’s second attempt to become a member of the OCC. After working as an administrative law judge at the OCC, she left her position in late 2001 to begin working as a consulting geologist and run for the statewide office.

In 2003 Murphy returned to private law practice with an emphasis in title, regulatory practice and oil and gas litigation.

Murphy is well acquainted with the plight of mineral owners in northwest Oklahoma having grown up in the Woodward area. As a fifth generation Oklahoman, she is very familiar with agriculture and petroleum issues.

Murphy believes Oklahoma’s energy is a “Successful Past, Bright Future.”

“In one hundred years, Oklahoma has gone from being the new kid on the block to being a leader in Energy,” Murphy said.

Based on 2006 data, Oklahoma ranked third in natural gas production and fifth in oil production in the United States, Murphy said.

“In an era of declining oil and gas resources, alternative fuels are becoming more vital to our future,” she said. “Currently, we’re developing wind power, solar energy, hydrogen power and bio fuels.”

Coal, once a staple of energy, is being reinvented through improving technology as a source of cleaner, increasingly efficient power, Murphy said.

“Challenge and excitement lie ahead for the energy industry and consumers alike,” Murphy said. “Oklahoma, with its rich tradition of leadership in the energy industry, is poised to continue that greatness in the coming years.”

Currently Murphy lives in Edmond. She is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Oklahoma Geological Society.

She is also a part-time personal fitness trainer. She continues to be actively involved with her family’s farm and ranch in Ellis County.

“Oklahomans need to know that I am someone who understands both rural and urban areas and the impact of energy on both family and business budgets and ways of life,” Murphy said.

By Jim Powell, Staff Writer

Dana Murphy, a Republican running for a seat on the Corporation Commission, believes she has the experience and background necessary to serve on the commission and wants to emphasize to citizens the importance of the position.

“Every time you flip a light switch, fill your car up with gas, use a telephone or drive across a railroad crossing you’ve been affected by the Corporation Commission in some form,” Murphy said during an interview in Yukon last week. “This is one of the most important offices in the state of Oklahoma and yet how many Oklahoman’s really know what it does?

Deep-rooted and a fifth generation Oklahoman, Dana Murphy, is running for a seat on the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.
When asked what her platform was Murphy responded, that energy is going to be on the forefront of our lives from this point on and the Commission will be the ones to make the decision on how to handle that. Her slogan is E-cubed- Energy, Experience, Excellence. That is the best way to describe her because if you want someone with energy to get the job done, someone with experience to do the job best and she looks at it as excellence, not because we should do it but because we can.

Dana Murphy won’t be the only candidate for the two Oklahoma Corporation Commission seats open in this fall’s election, but she may be the only one who has memorized the commission’s mission statement.

She pauses in her recitation to emphasize what she thinks is the most important few words in the statement, “Balance the rights and needs of the people with those of the regulated entities which provide essential and desirable services for the benefit of Oklahoma and its citizens.”

The Woodward native says she is making her second run for Corporation Commission because “it’s just about stepping up and doing what’s right.”
